I started playing and singing solo in some area cafés for tips. Then some bands started asking me to sit in and do some songs with them. When people started telling me that I needed to form my own band, I did not think it would be possible and was not sure how to go about it. Then some people said they would like to sit in with me and play music, and that is how the band Big Country was started.
I have had the privilege to work with several talented musicians and each one of them has helped me along the way. All I ask of all the band members is that we play the music the best that we can and have fun doing it. We want everyone that comes out to see us to have a good time, because that is what we are going to do.
When I am asked what kind of music we do, I tell them, "we keep it country." We do a lot of the old traditional country songs and also some of the newer ones. People have told us that we have a different style and sound. I can't really put my finger on what is different about us from other bands, except we do the songs the way we feel them and not neccessarily the way they were originally done.
We try to play music that people want to hear and that will keep them out on the dance floor.
I have been asked who has influenced me the most musically, and without a doubt I'd have to say George Jones, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Johnny Bush, Faron Young, Darrell McCall, Alan Jackson, and George Strait. There are many others, but those would be the top influences. I also love that good old Western Swing music of Bob Wills.
The band is made up of some very talented musicians and we have mostly been playing in San Angelo and the surrounding area. We're also branching out to the Abilene, Brownwood, Fort Worth, and Bandera areas.
When people ask what the plans for the band are in the future, I have to say I really don't know. We all love to play music and I guess as long as people like what we are doing and they keep coming out to hear us, we will strive to keep adding more songs to our playlist, and try to deliver what the people want to hear. |
